Drake + TIFF Future Projections present Shaun Gladwell

Sept. 4, 2014 - Sept. 14, 2014

For the seventh year in a row, the Drake Hotel is an official off-site for the Toronto International Film Festival's Future Projections, a city-wide programme dedicated to taking the moving image from the cinema to the gallery — and beyond.

The Drake's Future Projections programme will be dedicated to screening across all Drake properties the work of Shaun Gladwell. The Australian-born, London-based video artist portrays cultural figures like the skateboarder and freestyle BMX rider in self-described performative landscapes to hypnotic effect.

At Drake One Fifty, a programme of Gladwell's early works will be screened nightly from Sept 4-14:
Double Linework (2000) documents Gladwell tracing various road lines within urban environments, using the camera’s viewfinder as his eye.

Storm Sequence (2000) is a filmed self-portrait of Gladwell skateboarding at extreme slow-motion as a storm brews at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

Pataphysical Man (2005) represents the dynamics of a breakdancer in the tradition of Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man and Le Corbusier’s modular man.
